If you are hospitalized, in addition to the 30% copayment on medical care costs, you must also pay yourself as meal expenses (referred to as “inpatient meal standard expenses”) 510 yen/meal for up to three meals/day.

While the actual cost of meals during hospitalization is 690 yen/meal (up to three meals/day) based on standard meal expenses, the Health Insurance Society pays the amount in excess of inpatient meal standard expenses, as "Inpatient Meal Expenses".

The same inpatient meal standard expenses apply to both insured persons and dependents. These expenses do not qualify as High-Cost Medical Care Benefit.

Health Insurance Societies provide dependents with Inpatient Meal Expenses as "Dependents' Medical Care Expenses."

Persons with low income refer to insured persons and dependents exempted from municipal tax or to insured persons and dependents who do not require public assistance if they are approved as eligible for measures for reducing cost burdens for persons with low income.

Persons aged 70-74 who are insured persons and dependents, and exempt from paying municipal tax

Persons aged 70 or above in households whose insured persons and dependents are all exempt from paying municipal tax and whose incomes meet certain standards (e.g., annual pension income of no more than 800,000 yen)
